- : OK, it seems this is going to be a common problem using WinTalk, so
- : here's the scoop:
-
- : The TALK software included with most Unix systems is *not very good*.
- : Among other things, this means that if you are trying to talk to a
- : Unix host, and it cannot translate your IP address into a hostname
- : using the Domain Name System (DNS), the talk will fail.
-

-
- : Exactly. Your PC needs a DNS-registered hostname. This involves
- : talking to your sysadmin, picking a name for your PC, and getting that
- : name put into a hosttable. Now, if you put that name into your
- : *nameserver's* hosttable, life will be ideal - anyone who wants the
- : name that goes with IP address a.b.c.d will use the DNS and go ask your
- : nameserver, who will say "oh, sure, I know him! That's PC.foo.com".
- : If you don't register the name in your nameserver's hosttable, you can
- : still get things to work, but only if you add the PC's name/ip-address
- : to the individual hosttables of the machines you want to TALK to.

- Glen: thanks for the reply. Are you saying that WinTalk will not work
- with BOOTP over a slip connection?
-
- And -- I am one of the folks with a system in which WinTalk will not
- load. Actually, it is OK running at home, but at the office it pops
- up the little window that says
-
- gethostname() error
- Couldn't get my hostname!
-
- Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the relevant
- parameters of both systems if you want. When I get this message,
- WinQVT/Net is running over Trumpet Winsock alpha #18 with no problem
- -- that's what I am using to compose this message.
